MBX is a mailbox file format and contains multiple email messages in a single text file. Historically, MBX files were found mainly on Unix OS but now these are supported by Mac and Windows OS.
When users create email messages through Outlook Express, these messages contained in a mailbox folder or saved in MBX format. Due to this, MBX files are also known as Outlook Express mailbox files. These mailbox files were created by Outlook Express before version 6.
MBX files are also created by Eudora, an email client for Windows and Mac operating systems. You can open Eudora MBX files with Thunderbird email program.
History
MBX file represents plain text files that store multiple email messages. Each message begins with “From_” and ends with a blank line (without any spaces). Between the From_line and the blank line, there is a message body in RFC 2822 format.
There are several internal forms of MBX file format: mboxo, mboxcl, mboxrd, and mboxcl2. They are created on the basis of different versions of Unix systems.
